The IT industry is still very much in need of skilled personnel. According to the results
of the silicon.com Skills Survey 2000, almost 50% of respondents (46.9%) reported
positions in their departments that they were unable to fill. Although once in IT, staff
seem keen to stay (84% said that they intended to be in IT ten years from now) it is
increasingly difficult to get new, qualified recruits. One reason for this could be that
IT directors are too demanding (one recent advertisement required an employee with three
years experience of Windows 2000) and that agencies do not understand requirements
and therefore do not put people forward for positions unless they are an exact match. The
most sough-after skills are those in e-commerce.
