NEWSThe Internet price war continues (08.03.00)

The UK’s Internet price wars have hotted-up yet again since Alta Vista’s announcement earlier this week that it would offer unlimited Internet service for a small one off charge. Since this announcement, cable company NTL has unveiled what it calls the UK’s first-ever free internet service – ntlworld. To take up this generous offer from NTL, customers must subscribe to its cable TV and phone service or spend at least £10 a month on phone calls.

Today it has been announced that BT is making its move into the Internet price war by unveiling a range of packages which it claims are at least as cheap as those available in the US. The offers for home Internet users include a monthly fee for unlimited access at the weekend and evenings, and a slightly higher fee for round the clock access. These charges include the cost of line rental. The Government is responsible for fuelling this price war. It has been calling for cheaper Internet access to keep the UK in line with other countries.
